Carolina Autumn, and a Conundrum

As a lifetime Floridian, I'm experiencing my first true autumn. South Florida has no autumn to speak of, and Tallahassee fall consists of three weeks of cooler weather before the onset of the winter ice age and the three yellow leaves sprouted by a plucky oak tree in the Best Buy parking lot. Autumn was something experienced by people in television commercials.

But here...

The leaves are gorgeous--deep red and bright gold, and they blanket the rolling slopes of the surrounding mountains. For the past few days, whenever we've left the house, I've greeted the appearance of "Jeff Hardy's hair" because that's what the vivid splashes bring to mind, Jeff Hardy's Rainbow Brite hair. It's beautiful in the twilight, dim fire in the fading light of the soft, melted-butter sunlight. As I look out my window, the mountain bleeds and burns.
