The 35th Precinct

I saw V For Vendetta today and loved it. I was worried it was going to be a brainless gorefest, but it was smart and engaging, and the violence served a purpose. The allegory and political insinuations were a trifle hamfisted; John Hurt looked more like Hitler than Bush, and if Lark Hill and the medical experiments conducted therein weren't a direct parallel to the Nazis, then my college education has proven utterly worthless. However, that doesn't mean that its message wasn't a good or timely one, and I can only hope that if people's worst surmises come true and Bush goes round the bend and establishes a totalitarian theocracy, the citizens of this country will rouse themselves and take to the streets.

Sadly, given our illustrious history of willful apathy, that hope is a fragile one.

Some have expressed displeasure with the romance between V and Evey, but I had no quibble with it. Indeed, it was tastefully done when you consider what a soppy mess it could have become. This is probably because I've never read the graphics novels, and am therefore immune to the frothing rage that so often seizes fans when canon is besmirched by the filthy, grubby grope of Hollywood's perverse fingers. Had I read them beforehand, I expect I would have fished my Tights of Chafing Indignation from the laundry pile and fought the Man with my awesome powers of wank.

While in the theater, I saw the trailer for X3. I have a feeling that were I a mutant, less charitable souls would argue that I am I'd be lining up under Magneto's banner on this one.
