ETA: This is why I'm striking on Friday. Not because of disappearing Basic accounts, and not because of Interest manipulation and/or suppression.
I have no idea what's going on in the kerfluffle with Mr. Anton Nosik of LJ/SUP because I haven't waded through all the provided links. If his comments have provoked anti-Semitic assholery, then those spewing it are reprehensible troglodytes who deserve every human contempt.
However, I find Mr. Nosik's assertion that those LJers who have chosen or will choose to participate in Friday's strike are enemies of LJ just a bit rich.
Less than a week ago, LJ/SUP was pimp-slapping us in terse press releases and telling us to shut up and like it, dickless consumer bitch, and now they're crying sabotage and claiming that LJ is a community, after all.
Well, which is it, SUP? IS LJ a business based on the traditional model of crack dealer and consumer, or is it a symbiotic community based on user-generated content and interaction between end users and service providers?
If you're a traditional business, then you can be the biggest dick on the block and provide service by fiat. You can adopt your like-it-or-lump-it stance. Because you're right; you don't have to sell us anything. You can define your inventory as you see fit, and we, the consumer in this rigid model, can suck it up or leave.
If too many leave, though, LJ is screwed and you're left with a desiccated, jizz-soaked husk.
If LJ is a symbiotic organism that demands and then meets that demand with a supply of its own making, then it's you, SUP, that needs to like it or lump it. You can't treat your content providers like expendable commodities and expect them to mindlessly produce more content which you sell to line your pockets. Humans are thick and placid, I grant you, but nothing riles us more than to be told we're stupid(even if we are)and worthless. We like to think we're special snowflakes who matter.
So talk to us. Tell us what you plan to do. Let us in on the decision-making process. Let us continue to build the community that caught your greedy, money-grubbing eye in the first place. We must've been thriving for you to have acquired us in the first place. Nobody knowingly buys a turd, after all, and very few turds house diamonds underneath the brown polish.
You want to get rich and sell us junk we don't need? Leave us alone. Fatten us up like slaughterhouse pigs by feeding us and giving us a warm, cozy sty to slop in. Protect us from the pitchfork-wielding poachers infected with Morality Pox and Children's Fever and the vegan hippies who'd set us all free to roam the Internet badlands "for our own good".
