I went to see POTC 2 today. I was supposed to go last Friday, but I begged off to finish "Brothers and Sisters". The film gets off to a slow start, but once again, Johnny delivers as Cap'n Jack. He teeters and totters and grimaces with panache, and it is clear that he's having fun in every damn frame. And because he was having fun, I had fun. It was pure swashbuckling fun, and as far as I'm concerned, it deserves every penny it earns.
Still no Oscar on the horizon for Orlando Bloom, but he was far less wooden than in the original, and my girl parts cramped when he got shirtless and wet. He might never be Olivier, but neither is he Jabba the Hutt, and damn, the bare back, the smooth, supple flesh...
I would like to thank Cap'n Jack for his equal-opportunity hiring policy. His latest crew featured 2 octogenarians, a guy with one arm and a bum leg, and a guy with a wooden eye. Under those loose standards, I, too, can sail the high seas. Sure, he'd abandon me to some hideous fate when I became inconvenient, but in the meantime, what fun it would be. ~Grabs cutlass, rolls onto deck~ Yarrr!
Fun as it was, it is not a movie for young children. The gore and violence are graphic, and Jones' crew, while artistically fabulous, are the stuff of nightmares.
