It appears that the New York Transit workers have gone on strike. I can't imagine the havoc that will wreak on the city. I've never been there, but I know it relies on its mass transit to run smoothly.
I know driving a bus or a subway in New York must suck. You're beseiged by grouchy, pushy, asshat business people, winos, and crackheads who smell like dog barf. You've probably seen fistfights and people jerking off into Coke bottles. The pay is lousy compared to what you must endure. I'm sure there are days when you long for removable retinas.
But a strike is a bad idea. For most people, the transit strike will be a major inconvenience, but what about the elderly and disabled that depend on buses and subways to stay alive? You've got to eat or get your insulin or digoxin somehow, and walking isn't always an option. I know most places in New York deliver, but if the subways are idle, that might not be viable, either, and as trendy as New York is, I doubt they have curbside pill delivery.
So Grandma or Lieutenant Dan gets to starve to death in their apartment or go into diabetic shock and die because you wanted a drop in the retirement age and a piece of the billion-dollar surplus? "Sorry 'bout those eight days with no food. I needed a pay bump, pal."
