As promised, here is an excerpt from my ongoing Haldirfic. I thought about posting this chapter in its entirety, but it still needs some sprucing up.

Prologue Part I

Small Mercies, Part II )
Another thousand down. I've decided to try multiple-POV chapters in this fic, which is a technique I haven't employed since my SLS days. We'll see how it goes.

I stumbled across a pair of Haldir/OFC fics last night. They weren't standards by which all others should be measured, and there were minor technical flaws, but I've read far worse and written more blatant Sues, and it was clear that the writer was having fun. The smut was occasionally overwrought, and the writer handwaved time jumps and the boring minutiae of life to get to the angst and romance and sex, but it was nice to see elves with senses of love, desire, familial bonds, fear, and insecurity. Haldir sometimes veered into excessive, dewy-eyed weepiness, and I can't see Galadriel matchmaking with her marchwarden and a human girl who's been there for less than a day and entrusting her to be his emotional anchor while he goes through a wrenching, life-threatening ritual to confront long-ignored demons, but what can I say? It was a guilty-pleasure read, the LOTR equivalent of a Harlequin romance from the airport bookstore. If you're interested, then Google Haldir's Therapy and its thrilling, angsty sequel, Haldir's Redemption by Ranger.

A/N: Because this is based on Peter Jackson's The Two Towers, it contradicts the literary canon. Likewise, I have taken certain liberties with the nature of Elvish marriage bonds. If you are a Tolkien purist, this might not be the fic for you.

Another nugget of goofery from my descent back into LOTR madness:

It shouldn't work as well as it does, but the creator took great pains to sync the clips to the music, and something about it just makes me LOL.

I banged out a thousand words of Sprache XXI, and it looks like it might be done in four or five days. If so, I'll have a glut of fic to post at the end of the year.

A/N: This story uses LOTR Movieverse as its canon; as such, bookverse sticklers, beware. Bookverse!Haldir survived the War of the Ring and journeyed to the Grey Havens; there is no record of him having a wife, but I think it's a reasonable assumption. What good is living forever if you never get laid? Anyway, if he did have a wife, we can be sure their Grey Havens journey was smoother than this. Blame Peter Jackson, my kindred angst whore. Written in 2004. For [livejournal.com profile] death_ofme. This ought to tide you over until I can shake the NY monkeys.

Those Who Linger )
Today, I paid the utility bill and bought Dearly Devoted Dexter, one of the novels that inspired Dexter. I read a few pages of the original Dexter novel to be sure I'd like the style first. The prose is breathlessly arty in spots, but not so pretentious that I want to tear out a few pages and wipe my butt with them just to imbue them with a whiff of the common. I'm sure I'll comment on it here when I'm finished.

I've been nostalgic for LOTR fen and fic since I watched a bit of FOTR on TNT a few days ago, so I probably will write the Haldir/OFC Grey Havens fic that's been flitting coyly through the fathomless depths of my mythpool since TTT. I've been so nostalgic that I snagged an icon of some hot elf tottie, an icon which I will couple with this post. Mmm, Haldir. So nummy. He had the best battle wardrobe, too, but then, I've always been a sucker for deep, rich reds. If I do write the fic in question, it won't be long--ten chapters at best--because my Tolkien canon fu resembles that of a penguin who got slipped a fish roofie trying to do tai chi on a hot, greased griddle. You know, Mumbles with a head injury.

But that's for later. Right now, it's cookies and a new episode of NCIS
.
