My Internet connection has been spotty for the past few days. Since the tech swore the box was fine the last time he was here, I'm beginning to wonder if someone nearby isn't leeching my bandwidth, since the drops only seem to happen after seven or so. I should probably just figure out how to secure my network, but I'm terrified of locking myself out of my own connection.

The SOPA protest came and went with a whimper. After all the bloviating and bluster, only a handful of sites walked the walk and took the hit that going dark brought. Many of those that did participate did so in a half-assed manner; when your "protest" can be defeated by NoScript, it is feeble. I wasn't looking forward to being inconvenienced by the blackout, but better that than the disappointment of realizing that for all of American Netizenry's sabre-rattling avowals that they would fight tooth-and-nail to protect the sanctity of the Internet, most couldn't endure the privation and loss of income for a single day. They're soft and easily-quelled and happy to do nothing as long as it means that they can post to Facebook and Twitter about the latest episode of Glee. At least until the government brings the force of SOPA to bear and crushes those outlets, at which point they will wail and gnash and demand to know why no one stood up for their freedoms. That's the last time I buy into the hype for the next great Internet-led protest.

I wish I could find an uncomplicated live word counter for Openoffice. Watching the word count rise before my eyes is exceedingly motivational, I have discovered. I found one on their extensions forum, but it involved a bit of coding and customization, and while I could likely manage it if I had step-by-step instructions, I don't want to take the chance of accidentally lobotomizing the entire program.
