The last Supernatural fic I posted garnered good reviews, but someone took issue with the fact that I didn't integrate information from Origins into the story. Origins is the comic book series that purportedly reveals the backstory of Clan Winchester. I have not read them, nor do I intend to. What boggled me was the intimation that fics that did not incorporate information from the comics were not canon-compliant.

Really? What happened to the idea that canon was whatever actually happened onscreen, and everything else was conjecture? My first SPN fic, Tucson, was criticized because it did not take into account information from the series' website and Superwiki, and now I am expected to know the intimate details of comic books I do not own and can't afford. Is this a reasonable expectation of the SPN fandom, or is there an obsession with canon in SPN that doesn't exist in other TV fandoms? Must you have disposable income out the yang in order to buy every tie-in so that you can keep up with the fandom Joneses? Was there such an obsession in Buffy, Angel, or the Star Trek fandom?

I will write SPNfic in accordance with the show and the canon in the Wiki, but dropping money on graphic novels to ensure canonical perfection is beyond the pale, and if that's what SPN fandom demands, then it can kiss my ass. SPNfic is a hobby, not a vocation, and I'd rather eat than suffer for my "art".
