I was too busy watching S1 of Spartacus to write today. Such a good show, full of conniving, pathos, and intrigue. The person you like one moment might be an asshole ten minutes later, and the one you've written off as an irredeemable jerkwad might surprise you with an unexpected act of courage or loyalty. For instance, Asher betrayed Barca to his death to escape a huge gambling debt, but he also refused to sell out his master for a few dinare. Make no mistake, Batiatus is a deplorable, manipulative tool who deserves to die seven times over, and I won't be sorry when it happens, but I loathe mercenary cravens who switch loyalties with the breeze.
And Crixus. I never expected to like him, but I do. He's no friend to Spartacus, but he might have been under kinder circumstances, and he is possessed of a sense of honor, narrow in scope though it might be. He didn't have to rescue Spartacus from the assassin; indeed, it might've been better for him if he hadn't. He likely would have reclaimed his position as Champion of Capua by default. But he saved him because Spartacus was his brother gladiator and deserved an honorable death.
I felt awful for Ilithyia's patsy. Tortured, castrated, and crucified for his failed assassination attempt. I can hardly call him honorable since he tried to strangle a man who'd treated him with respect, but he didn't sacrifice the sad, bloody remnants of his pride in a futile attempt to save himself by giving up the name of his scheming patron. Poor fool.
I'm starting to love the Doctore. A lot.
