Ruffa the Rottweiler/Newfie mix. She is so damn FLUFFY. And that face! I want to cuddle her.

I was so rankled by the interruption of CSI:Miami and the subsequent interminable gabble of the talking heads that I utterly forgot to watch The Killing last night. Dammit. Given that they were convinced that the teacher, Mr. Ahmed, was a skeevy perv who seduced his female students and had graduated to murder, I'm going to presume that they spent most of the episode hounding him and making gross insinuations about his proclivity for impressionable young girls. I'm also going to presume that he isn't the culprit because it was only the sixth episode of thirteen, and anyone who's watched mysteries knows, the more the police hammer a suspect with mounting circumstantial evidence, the less likely the suspect's guilt.

So, with Mr. Ahmed in the clear by dint of his role as red herring, my suspect list and guilty-party ballot needs revision. My money is still on Det. Holder, Linden's partner. He radiates skeeve like a wino radiates ass funk, and why is he stuffing envelopes full of money into the Larsens' mailbox in the middle of the night? Mr. Larsen was hardly surprised to find it there, and if he was expecting it, why? My first thought was that Mr. Larsen had used Holder to keep tabs on the investigation, but Holder arrived in Seattle before the body was discovered. So, if Mr. Larsen and Holder were in cahoots, then Mr. Larsen would have had to have known that Rosie was dead before her body was discovered. Since I don't think that's the case, that leaves two options. Either Holder killed Rosie himself in a drug-fueled fit of rage and is now paying blood money, or Holder feels badly for the family and is trying to ease the financial burden by slipping them money. Where that money comes from is another mystery. Holder says he won it on a sports bet, but Linden clearly saw him talking to a man in a car earlier that day, and the scene had quite a tawdry mob flick patina to it. Could Holder be a cop on the mob boss' payroll, the same mob boss for whom Mr. Larsen once worked? If he is in the mob's pocket, what is he doing for them?

Linden's put-upon fiance is another suspect, though he is rapidly slipping off the radar. Aside from bridling at Linden's repeated delays in moving to Sonoma with him as she promised and her growing obsession with the Larsen case, there isn't much to recommend him as the killer. His only function seems to be to provide personal tension and remind Linden and the viewers that this isn't "that case". This isn't the first time she's been consumed by a case, it seems, and since we've been reminded of it with increasing frequency, I think that case will prove germane to this one ere the end.

A third suspect is Stan Larsen's friend and stalwart employee, the meek fellow who changed the older son's bedsheets after he wet the bed. On the surface, it was an innocuous moment of kindness and attention paid to a boy who has been completely ignored since his sister's death, but there was an unsettling undercurrent to it that made me want to shudder and scrape my teeth with my tongue.

For now, my money remains on Det. Holder.
