After a Long Hiatus, Some X-Files Musing.
I watched two episodes of X-Files on Sunday. "End Game," the second half of "Colony," was Ok, but "Fearful Symmetry" was terrible. It's not the idea of aliens collecting animal foeti for their own Noah's Ark that was bad; it was the shameless, unadorned proselytizing. The show works best when the stories are allowed to stand on their own and speak for themselves. Sometimes, ghoulies are just ghoulies, and by trying to burden them with the unsupportable mantle of social consciousness, Carter strips them of what little emotional resonance they had and renders them a laughingstock. Not to mention the hideous gorilla suit sported by the actor who played Sophie, the signing gorilla. Just...wow.
The wheelchair tinkerer is coming by on July 5th to collect the balance of his fees for the service he rendered in October, and while he's here, if he doesn't mind, I'm going to ask about tire replacement. My plastic front tires have hairline cracks, and after the slip yesterday, I'm taking no chances. The rear tires are bald rubber at this point. I'm guessing it'll cost me another $100 out-of-pocket after the wangle with Medicare.
The payment to the wheelchair tinkerer means I can treat myself to only one DVD this month. I've torn between Numb3rs S1, X-Files S3, and Monk S1. Any opinions on Monk? I love Tony Shaloub, his captain, and Detective Fisher, but I'm not so hot on his S2-6 sidekick. I've heard the S1 woman was better, but wanted more money than the producers were willing to pay.
Part II of my
lyric_ficathon fic is finished and stands at, 5,563 words. I finished the day 14 words shy of my usual 1,000, but I didn't see the point in starting Part III just to type 14 words. The third and final part will start tomorrow if the weather permits.
