I know Walmart is the Great Internet Satan, but its website has proven more helpful than the bike shop and wheelchair vendors I've contacted about my wheelchair. Thanks to their Site to Store program, I can order a new wheelchair from their website, pay with cash or credit at my chosen store, and either pick it up or have it delivered. Granted, their wheelchairs aren't as swanky as those in the dedicated stores, but they're extremely affordable, and I found one with features similar to my current chair. It's just steel rather than titanium. It might not last as long as this one has, but it will certainly outlast it, as it is years past its expected service date. At the very least, it will give me time to prepare for my next dick joust with the medical establishment.
So to recap:
-No prescription needed
-it cost several hundred dollars, not several thousand
-can order online with the specs I want
-can pay for and pick up in store.
I won't be able to place the order until the new year, when I'll have the necessary funds, but it's a relief to know that I have options and am not at the mercy of disinterested bike shop owners and an indifferent medical establishment that sees no urgency in a broken spoke on a wheel used to support someone's body weight all day, every day. Thank you, Walmart.
