Ninety days from now, I will see Rammstein again.

But first, I must pass those intervening days, and so I read. I'm one hundred pages into Deja Dead, Kathy Reichs' debut novel. The protagonist is almost unbearably self-satisfied in places, and the writing is occasionally stiff and often uncertain, but it's a ripping mystery, and I can't wait to rejoin the characters and follow the trail.

I would like to note that I have no idea how enterprising producers got the character of "Bones" Brennan out of Dr. Temperance Brennan. They may share a name, but there the similarities end. Book!Brennan is a recognizable human being with virtues and flaws; TV!Bones is an enraging automaton who views the people in her life as a convenient menagerie of living anthropological specimens. Book!Brennan can be obliviously self-righteous on occasion, but her pretentious internal railings are motivated by a sincere desire to help people. TV!Bones is obliviously self-righteous all the time, and her whiffling screeds are motivated by TV writers having adolescent badass fantasies about pithy one-liners taking down the bad guys as handily as the heavy butt of a gun. I like TV!Bones now and again. I like Book!Brennan all the time.

I need to write again, and I will, but maybe not tonight. Or maybe so. Maybe I'll write one hundred words, or two. Just enough to get the juices flowing and the blood stirring. Just enough to let me know I'm still alive.
