Memories cling like spidersilk, like dust on his skin. He can't shake them off, and he's not sure he would even if he could; not because he wants to keep them--there are memories he would erase if he could, fragments of recollection that flutter uneasily in his mind like tatters of rotten lace--but because he's not sure he should. Each loss reshapes him, and he's afraid that to lose a memory, no matter how poisoned and rancid, is to lose a part of himself, perhaps even that part that has won him his happiness, Ginny and the children and a life of boring domesticity.
So he holds to his memories and hopes they do not not rise up against him in the night to smother him in his sleep.
