I disconnected my phone and cable today, and the finality of it prompted a minor weeping jag. After that, I waltzed with Social Security and transferred my money. I also made an appointment with the dentist for the 4th of August. I shudder at what he will no doubt find. I suspect he'll be booking that cruise to Veracruz. I've needed attention for years, but have possessed neither the funds nor the means to get there. My prediction: one root canal and three fillings.

It wasn't all business today. I went to the Georgia Mountain Fair to see Jimmy Wayne perform. It was nine dollars, and money well spent. The concert was a brief hour, but the musicianship was superb, and sitting in the concert hall with the blue hairs and the small-town girls desperately trying to catch the eye of a small-time country star, I thought I could be happy here. I knew I could be when I wandered into the exhibit area and ate a Polish sausage with slaw and onions and sweet relish. I don't know how to explain it because Polish sausage is Northern food, but that moment was so sublimely Southern that my heart rose in my chest. It was the moment I knew I was going to be okay here.
