The Beginning of the End
Well, LJ has, as Dr. Hawkes would say, gone to that creepy place again. I have a sinking, sneaking suspicion that the new "guidelines" for content will be draconian. creatively stifling, and designed to Disnefy fandom so that LJ, like so many other aspects of society, can be used as an electronic babysitter by parents who want the social cachet of a child without the consequent responsibility. Once again, society as a whole, particularly the single, the voluntarily childless, and the young, are being held accountable because other people chose to procreate and are now panicking because of the piss-poor job they've done with caring for and about the world around them.
On a tangential yet related note, I've often wondered if so many people are so angry nowadays because they feel they were lied to by the people in charge-parents, teachers, and government officials. I knew it was a hard world out there by dint of my disability, but I suspect a great many of my and subsequent generations were raised in a bubble word, separated from germs and the harsh realities of pain, disappointment, and disillusionment by stupid, well-intended parents. Only when they were thrust into the real world, they were unprepared to deal with the fact that it wasn't built to their specifications, no, you can't always get what you want, and there are other people to consider. I wonder if so many people turn to violence because they've been conditioned to believe that you should always get what you want, and that life should never hurt.
LJ is sanitizing its content because too many people don't want to be confronted with the fact that life isn't heterosexual, middle-class suburban values for everyone. Not everyone likes it missionary-style, and not everyone believes that children blow sugar and sunshine out their asses. Not everyone determines their value by the presence or absence of children and the value assigned thereto.
I will remain on LJ at least until the revised content guidelines are posted, but I have begun the laborious process of gathering my entries and will be moving them to other blogging sites over the coming weeks. Yes, it's a loss of $150 dollars that were hard to come by on my fixed income, but I would rather lose $150 than my right to speak freely.
