Today was Dullsville. I spent it futzing mindlessly around the apartment, watching TV and reading LJ. Even the later has been sluggish, as if everyone, so voluble for all these months, is suddenly all talked out. Is it just that school is about to resume session, or is it just the ennui that settles like dust when people have done too little for too long?
I never did set SLS!Alastor Moody on his peg and foot today, but I'm getting ready to(or a-fixin' to, as my late father would have said)get my Nevillefic closer to that fabled finish line. It's in view, but as in so many other things in life, its closeness is an illusion born of writerly desperation. I love the story, or I wouldn't be writing it, but I'm eager for the next phase to begin so that I can get back to SLS.
Logic dictates that there is nothing stopping me from writing SLS 53 and the Nevillefic at the same time, but I can't. For reason beyond my comprehension, my brain has decided that it is unethical and an insult to its biochemical processes to leave a one-shot unfinished in order to write something else. Given that I set aside SLS to write this one-shot in the first place, it makes no sense, but there you have it. Maybe I'm just hung up on the idea of a one-shot as a self-contained whole, whereas WIPs, by their very natures, can be left to their own devices, since people do not expect the situations set forth in them to be resolved in one sitting.
Whatever the reason, whether it be a question of writerly ethics or my latent insanity coming at long last to the fore, the Nevillefic must be finished before I can start SLS 53. So, here I go. Wish me luck.
