Roomie and I went to the mall today just to be out and about. We wound up eating at Barnhill's and seeing The Longest Yard. For those unfamiliar with the gastronome's utopia that is Barnhill's, let me enlighten you. Barnhill's features a buffet of Southern cooking-catfish, collard greens, turnip greens, mashed potatoes, biscuits, fried chicken, country-fried steak, sawmill and brown pan gravy... Just to step across the threshold is to add sixty points to your cholesterol, but the smells just sing to my redneck blood. There are worse ways to go than facedown in a plate of fluffy mashed potatoes, after all, like, say, meeting my end in a bowful of brussel sprouts.

I ate far too much, and life is beautiful. I would have eaten more, but for some reason, when it gets close to my menstrual cycle, my digestion goes berserk-acid reflux and indigestion like mad. Any other ladies out there have this problem?

After passing an hour in the Eden of the Wal-Mart masses, we went shopping for a watch. Our last watch, purchased for eight dollars last year at Wal-Mart, expired for no reason on Thursday, and as any rider of public transportation knows, knowing the time is vital. Too early, and you swelter in the heat, fighting off the hornets with your shopping bag and dancing to keep the fire ants at bay. One nanosecond late, and you're feasting on exhaust and gravel as the driver leaves you in the dust with a smile.

One would think the purchase of a watch would be easy, but finding one that didn't require a second mortgage took some doing. The stores we visited either had none or wanted staggering sums of money. We finally found a serviceable watch at Sears, an Armitron for twenty dollars. I wanted the Scooby watch, but since my roomie has to wear it, we settled for the plain black one instead. Maybe next month I'll go back and get the Scooby watch for myself.

I did manage to get some ficcing done in the brief respite from the thunderstorms, but with Arlene looming, I may be scarce tomorrow. After that, the final research paper will command my attention, but come Thursday, and I'm free. Free to fic until my fingers cramp, and you can bet I will.
