Today promises to be a busy day in Gueraland. I've got six papers due in a week, so most of the day will be spent frantically discussing the industrialization fears evident in Franz Leiber's Metropolis or the theme of rationalization and memory self-modification in The Passenger, as well as the idea of mob rule and the inherent social tendency toward conformity in M For Murder. Sounds like a barrel of fun, no? I'll keep you abreast of the Guera Academic Sextathlon in an ETA later this evening.

Also getting an ETA this evening is the word count of SLS51. I'm determined to break the 5,000 word mark tonight. ~girds loins~

Yesterday, I made mention of an entitlement!gimp at the bus depot. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around it. To sum up, a profoundly disabled woman with severe spasticity and speech impairment was rolling her modified T-130 Tiger Tank, otherwise known to the ables as a Hoveround, down the bus ramp of the Number 25. It was extremely, excruciatingly apparent that she had neither the coordination nor the mental acuity to handle the machine. She couldn't drive it in a straight line and kept veering wildly to the left and right as she careened down the ramp. Eventually, her front wheels hopped the guide rail, and she started to flip over onto the pavement. Three alert bystanders and the bus driver leapt to her rescue, righted her, and set her on the pavement.

How does she react to this generosity? Does she thank the men who acted so swiftly to save her from her own stupidity and potentially serious injury? No. She screams at them to get out of her way, calls them stupid, and berates them for damaging her chair before rolling off in a high dudgeon.

Excuse me, you fucking sterling candidate for retroactive abortion, but that is not how you behave when people are genuinely trying to help you, and I don't give His Majesty's good goddamn what your milksop mother or that narrow-minded, blinkered "independence counselor and advocate" told you; the world does not revolve around you just because you fell apart when you got to the showroom floor. Your shit does stink, and you have to behave decently toward your fellow men.

I know it's embarrassing to pull a boner like that in front of people when you're trying so hard to show the world that you have a place here just like anyone else, but screaming at people who are trying to make sure they don't see what little brains you have splattered over the concourse isn't the way to assert yourself. It's obnoxious, and it alienates people and makes it harder for people who need and appreciate the help to get it. If it were me they had saved, I would have thanked them profusely and paid their damn bus fare as a gesture of gratitude. They could have let your nasty, arrogant, sanctimonious ass hit the concrete, you ungrateful cow, and part of me wishes they had, because you desperately need a lesson in humility.

And while we're on the subject, you toerag, let me say that you have no business driving a heavy motorized wheelchair if you can't control it. Your driving was dangerous to yourself and to others, and you need an attendant. Your independence takes a backseat to the safety of others, I'm afraid. Note I said safety, not convenience. I couldn't care less if my being on a bus inconveniences passengers by making them get to the mall three minutes late, but I do care if it poses a danger to them in any way. That's why I never use my motorized chair on a bus. I know I am not capable of the precise maneuvering required to fit into the slot. Just because I'm crippled doesn't mean I'm exempt from having consideration for others.

Oh, and bus passengers pissing vinegar over the fact that the bus driver let on a roller who arrived just before he pulled out? Screw you. You didn't seem to care when it was you he was waiting for. Either he waits for all, or he waits for none. There is no pick and choose
